Orthodontics - Getting the Facts Straight

Braces. Love them or hate them, they're here to stay. And as time passes there are newer and more efficient ways to get your teeth straight using braces. Gone are the days of wacky head gear, with new technology also comes new braces.

Invisalign is a new type of orthodontic or oral appliance, that is used to straighten teeth like braces, only without the need for metal brackets and painful wires. Although in certain cases the metal brackets are unavoidable, depending on the type and severity of your situation, you might be a candidate for Invisalign. The benefit of Invisalign? Like the name suggests, it's somewhat invisible. People won't know you're wearing braces. They fit like retainers would, only they're clear and are molded to your teeth.

In the case where you might need metal braces, tiny metal brackets are attached to your teeth and then a wire is run through to hold the brackets in place, "bracing" your teeth towards straightening. Although they can be uncomfortable, the metal braces have become a bit fashionable to some people rather than ugly and disdainful like they have in the past.

Information on Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is a false tooth, which is fused between two crowns to fill in the area left by a missing tooth. These fake teeth can be made of alloys, gold, silver, porcelain or a mixture of all of the above. Dental bridges are supported by your natural teeth or can also be supported by dental implants.

Whether you are looking for a permanent or temporary solution to fill in that empty gap, there is a dental bridge ideally suited for your needs. Three of which are:
  • Traditional bridges are the most common type of bridge and are typically made of either ceramics, metal or porcelain. It involves creating a crown for your tooth or dental implant on either side of the missing tooth.
  • Cantilever bridges are used when there are adjacent teeth on only one side of the missing tooth or teeth. It is also mainly used in areas that are under much less stress, such as your front teeth.
  • Maryland bonded bridges or Resin-Bonded Bridges are less expensive, and are made of plastic teeth and gums supported by a metal framework.

What's the Deal With Dental Bonding?

What?

Dental bonding uses a tooth-colored resin; a durable plastic material, to repair a variety of structural issues with your teeth, oftentimes for cosmetic surgery.

Why?

Think of Dental Bonding as cover up, or make up for your teeth, only permanent. It is used to hide any flaws such as cracks or chips that may be apparent in your teeth by applying a thin coat of resin over the flaw then hardened with a laser that "bonds" the resin to the teeth. The resin can also be used to fix broken teeth, reshape a smile, fill in gaps or change the color of your teeth, such as removing stains.

Who?

Your Cosmetic Dentist can use Dental Bonding to fix a long list of cosmetic issues. You can find your Cosmetic Dentist on My Dentist USA!

When?

My Dentist USA is online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is never too late to search for your cosmetic dentist on My Dentist USA.

Information on Dental Implants

Dental Implants are artificial tooth replacements that are used to counter tooth loss. Dental Implants can be used to replace single or multiple missing teeth. They can also be used to help stabilize or support removable partial and full dentures.

Today's dental implants are better than they have ever been. And with continued research, they will only get better. In the future, we can expect dental implants to become even more convenient. Improvements will likely include shorter healing time, less time for restoration, simplicity of placement and restoration, and better aesthetic results.

What are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a "cap" that is shaped like a tooth, which is inserted over a tooth. It covers the tooth to restore its shape, size, appearance, and strength.

The crowns are cemented into place and fully cover the visible portion of the tooth.

The various types of dental crowns available are metal crowns, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns and all-ceramic or all-porcelain crowns.
