Are you a good candidate for Cosmetic Dentistry?

Many sites will give you a list of questions to ask yourself, that can help you decide if you think you are a good candidate for Cosmetic Dentistry. Unfortunately, the only people that can make that decision is you, and your dentist. No one else, no other site nor magazine, nor TV program, can make you enhance your smile. Only you can do that.

One comment emailed to us frequently after reading this question, is, "the best way to know if you are a good candidate for this is to ask yourself, Are you 100% happy with your smile?" It really is a good question though. If you are 100% happy, that is great. If you are not, then you can make a change. It is easier than ever to enhance your smile.

Amalgam Fillings Bad? Not So Says ADA.

There is a long time fear that amalgam (silver) fillings are bad for your health, especially in the brain development of young children and their neurological status. However after a report done by The Journal of the American Dental Association they found that, there was indeed, no harm done.

Mercury is known to be toxic in it's natural state to the human body, but combined with other metals such as silver, copper, tin and zinc, it forms a safe and stable alloy. Despite the alloy, many people feared the mercury would still be toxic to the human body, especially in children, since many children get their first fillings with their first cavities at relatively young ages.

During the seven year study they compared two groups of children, one with amalgam fillings and one using a resin based filling. After the study, there was no difference in neurological tests. And any diminishing neurological activity that was found, was found equally in both groups and attributed to normal childhood to adolescent aging.

So you can be confident that if you have the old "silver" fillings, that you're not in any danger at all. However, if the amalgam fillings are "unsightly" to you, you can always look for a Cosmetic Dentist to replace them with tooth colored resin fillings to perfect that beautiful smile that you have.

What is the difference between DDS and DMD, after the dentist's name?

DDS stands for "Doctor of Dental Surgery" and DMD stands for "Doctor of Dental Medicine."

This designates the degree awarded to the dentist, from the dental school, upon graduation. There is no difference between the two, as both the DMD and DDS have the exact same education. Both degrees use the same curriculum requirements set by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation.

What are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers, or "dental veneers," can change the appearance of teeth that are chipped, worn, stained, crooked, or generally damaged. A porcelain veneer acts as a thin shell, covering the surface of a tooth. Porcelain veneers are bonded directly to the front of teeth with adhesive cement for an immediate improvement in the shape and color of each tooth.

The color of porcelain veneers can be matched to the color of a patient's teeth. And because dental veneers are made of porcelain, a glassy composition, they are resistant to staining. Porcelain veneers reflect light in a similar way as tooth enamel, and can be buffed and shaped to look just like natural teeth.

The entire porcelain veneer cosmetic dentistry procedure normally takes only three visits to our Memphis office. In the first visit the patient will discuss the procedure with the cosmetic dentist. During this initial consultation the dental patient will have the opportunity to discuss how the final smile should look. Please feel free to bring pictures of ideal smiles to your initial consultation! During the second appointment the teeth will be prepared for the porcelain veneers and a mold will be made of the teeth. In the final appointment porcelain veneers, designed specifically for the patient, will be placed on the teeth.

Porcelain veneers have become popular in the time that they have been available because they are natural looking, durable, and long-lasting.

The answer to this FAQ was provided by certified dentist, Dr. Mickey Bernstein. To view more of Dr. Bernstein's responses to popular cosmetic dentistry FAQs, click here.

Making Your Tooth Feel Like a King with Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a "cap" that is shaped like a tooth, which is inserted over a tooth. It covers the tooth to restore its shape, size, appearance, and strength.

The crowns are cemented into place and fully cover the visible portion of the tooth.

The various types of dental crowns available are metal crowns, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns and all-ceramic or all-porcelain crowns.

Dental crowns:
  • protect your weak tooth from further harm, such as breaking or further cracking and deterioration
  • refurbish an already broken tooth or a worn down tooth
  • assist a tooth that has a considerable filling
  • secure a dental bridge in place
  • cover up misshaped teeth
  • cover up extremely discolored teeth

Information on Dental Bonding

Cosmetic dental bonding is an excellent option for individuals who wish to repair imperfections in one tooth or several teeth.

How it works

Dental bonding uses a tooth-colored resin; a durable plastic material, to repair a variety of structural issues with your teeth, oftentimes for cosmetic surgery. The basic concept is that dental bonding applies a "cover" of any natural flaws in your current teeth, by applying a thin coat of plastic material on the front of them. It is hardened with a special laser that essentially bonds the material to the tooth to improve your smile.

Dental bonding is used to repair:
  • To repair decayed teeth (composite resins are used to fill cavities)
  • To repair chipped teeth
  • To repair cracked teeth
  • To improve the appearance of discolored teeth
  • Remove stains
  • To fill in gaps between your teeth
  • To change the shape of teeth
  • To protect a portion of the tooth's root that has been exposed when gums recede

Information on Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is the most commonly requested procedure in cosmetic dentistry. People from all over seek teeth whitening due to tooth discoloration and staining. Red wine, soda, coffee, tea, sugary drinks and smoking are a few of the things that contribute to tooth discoloration over time.

Teeth whitening can be performed in one of two ways, in-office by your dentist or at home by you. The advantage of having your teeth whitened in-office is that you'll see faster results. Advantages of at-home products are lower costs and the ability to provide treatment when need be.
