Why are Orthodontics Painful?

Sometimes, the adjustments made can be a little painful, because the teeth are being pulled into place. However, the pain is minimal and can be solved with a simple over the counter medicine, like Tylenol. Also, if you have intense pain, which is very rare, you should consult with your orthodontist, as he/she can change the way your adjustments are being made.

Trends in Dental Implants

Today's dental implants are better than they have ever been. And with continued research, they will only get better. In the future, we can expect dental implants to become even more convenient. Improvements will likely include shorter healing time, less time for restoration, surgeries performed in one stage, simplicity of placement and restoration, and better esthetic results. Shouldn't you be considering dental implants?

Why are dental implants the best option for replacing missing teeth?

Every way you look at it, dental implants are a better solution to the problem of missing teeth. While high-tech in nature, dental implants are actually more tooth-saving than traditional bridgework, since implants do not rely on neighboring teeth for support.
  • Esthetic: Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth! Since dental implants integrate into the structure of your bone, they prevent the bone loss and gum recession that often accompany bridgework and dentures. No one will ever know that you have a replacement tooth.
  • Tooth-saving: Dental implants don't sacrifice the quality of your adjacent teeth like a bridge does because neighboring teeth are not altered to support the implant. More of your own teeth are left untouched, a significant long-term benefit to your oral health!
  • Confidence: Dental implants will allow you to once again speak and eat with comfort and confidence! They are secure and offer freedom from the irksome clicks and wobbles of dentures. They'll allow you to say goodbye to worries about misplaced dentures and messy pastes and glues.
  • Reliable: The success rate of dental implants is highly predictable. They are considered an excellent option for tooth replacement.

Are there different types of Dental Bridges?

There are 3 different types of Dental Bridges:
  • Traditional bridges are the most common type of bridge and are typically made of either ceramics, metal or porcelain. It involves creating a crown for your tooth or dental implant on either side of the missing tooth.

  • Cantilever bridges are used when there are adjacent teeth on only one side of the missing tooth or teeth. It is also mainly used in areas that are under much less stress, such as your front teeth.

  • Maryland bonded bridges or Resin-Bonded Bridges are less expensive, and are made of plastic teeth and gums supported by a metal framework.

Dental Bonding: What to Expect?

Unlike many cosmetic procedures, little advance preparation is needed for dental bonding. Anesthesia is usually not need for it unless it is repairing a tooth that is decaying. Your cosmetic dentist will use a shade chart to select the correct composite resin which will match your tooth color.

The surface of your tooth will be etched (scraping kind of, it roughens the tooth to allow for better bonding) and then a conditioned liquid will be applied. The composite resin is then applied, molded and smoothed out to the desired shape. A laser is then used to harden the material, and then your cosmetic dentist will make the final corrections, shaping, cleaning to ensure it matches the rest of your tooth surfaces.

Can Teeth Whitening Become an Addiction?

What Motivates Overuse?

For some, it's a narcissistic compulsion to maintain their youth, analogous to going for repeated plastic surgery, says Richard Frances, MD, an addiction expert and a clinical professor of psychiatry at New York University Medical School. "People are obsessed with the idea of perfecting their bodies and warding off the effects of age," he says.

Matthew Messina, DDS, a dentist in private practice in Cleveland and a spokesman for the American Dental Association, says television makeover programs have had a tremendous influence in making people see how an investment in their smile was also an investment in self-confidence. But this awareness, he says, "can be obsessive if we become hyperfixated."

What is Plaque?

Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that coats teeth. It consumes sugars in the foods we eat, and releases acids as a waste product. These acids slowly eat away at the enamel of teeth, if left unchecked, can cause tooth decay. Over time the plaque layer on teeth can harden to become tartar or calculus. This hard layer continues to release acids, and is even harder to remove than regular plaque. Plaque is a leading cause of gingivitis, early stage gum disease.

What are the Cons of Porcelain Veneers

There are many benefits to having porcelain veneers, but there are also some drawbacks as well. Porcelain veneers have the following disadvantages:
  • More expensive than regular composite veneers
  • Typically very little tooth is removed, but in some extreme cases, more tooth has to be removed and it can cause tooth trauma
It's always best to do your research and consult with a dentist to see which veneers would be best for you.

What to expect: Dental Crowns

Dental Crowns usually require at least two visits to your cosmetic dentists office. The initial visit involves the dentist probing and preparing the tooth and the second visit typically involves the placement of the permanent crown.

During the initial visit, your cosmetic dentist will most likely take some x-rays of your mouth to check the strength of your roots and the surrounding bone around the tooth. Your cosmetic dentist will then file down your tooth, to the chewing surface in order to make room for your dental crown. If a good amount of your tooth is missing, the dentist may actually use material to fill the area, to build up the tooth so it can support the crown. The amount of tooth removed is completely dependant on your specific scenario, along with the type of dental crown being used. The dentist will then make an impression of your teeth, which are then sent to a dental lab where your customized dental crown will be made. The crown usually is ready within 2 weeks. In the meantime, the dentist will insert a temporary dental crown, which will serve as the protection device until your permanent dental crown is ready.

During your second visit, to your cosmetic dentist, he/she will remove your temporary dental crown, and verify the color and fit of your permanent dental crown. When everything is completed, your cosmetic dentist will permanently cement your new dental crown in.

Orthodontics

Orthodontics is the specialty of correcting irregularity of your teeth. There are a couple procedures, such as braces and other devices specifically used to improve your smile. These methods work by applying continuous pressure to your teeth, over a period of time, to slowly redirect or move your teeth in a specific direction. Obviously, the goal is to give you the perfect straight smile.
