What is the difference between DDS and DMD, after the dentist's name?

DDS stands for "Doctor of Dental Surgery" and DMD stands for "Doctor of Dental Medicine."

This designates the degree awarded to the dentist, from the dental school, upon graduation. There is no difference between the two, as both the DMD and DDS have the exact same education. Both degrees use the same curriculum requirements set by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation.

Are you a good candidate for Cosmetic Dentistry?

Many sites will give you a list of questions to ask yourself, that can help you decide if you think you are a good candidate for Cosmetic Dentistry. Unfortunately, the only people that can make that decision is you, and your dentist. No one else, no other site nor magazine, nor TV program, can make you enhance your smile. Only you can do that.

One comment emailed to us frequently after reading this question, is, "the best way to know if you are a good candidate for this is to ask yourself, Are you 100% happy with your smile?" It really is a good question though. If you are 100% happy, that is great. If you are not, then you can make a change. It is easier than ever to enhance your smile.

Cosmetic Dental Crowns

Teeth are often restored with fillings of silver or composite plastics. These materials can often accomplish the aim of replacing the part of the tooth that has been lost in a strong and good-looking manner.

However, there comes a point where the damage to the tooth has removed too much structure to hold a filling. The restoration must be done by a technique that will attach to the remaining tooth, stand up under heavier use and meet more elaborate cosmetic requirements.

The crown is the dental restoration that can strengthen and restore the entire top of a tooth. The crown can also be part of the attachment of a fixed bridge for the replacement of teeth. The tooth is strengthened because it is covered from the outside with a casting of metal or ceramic that will wrap up and splint the tooth.

The chewing of the tooth can be improved because it can be reshaped to match more efficiently with the opposing teeth. A crown can improve cosmetics by the use of modern ceramic processes that produce translucency and color that is more natural than has ever been possible.

New Technology Makes Dental Implantation More Comfortable

Tomography, 3-D X-ray technology, is making dental implantation easier for the dentist and the patient. All the vital structures involved with dental implantation, such as nerves, bones and sinuses can be seen in 3-D making the placement of dental implants easier.

Before, dentists had to cut the gum to get to the bone to see where to place the implant. It was a long and arduous process that took days to place a tooth. Because bone density is different for individuals, the dentist had to guess where the ideal placement would be.

With tomography, dentists can see where there is a lot of bone, which is ideal for dental implantation. This not only reduces the amount of stress and trauma on the patient, but also makes the procedure faster, more precise and more natural - which of course makes for the best cosmetic result.

The Drawbacks to Dental Bonding

Everyone always talks about the pros of dental bonding. But what are the cons?

Cons of Dental Bonding:
  • Can easily be stained
  • Do not last long compared to veneers or crowns - usually about 3 years, though they can last up to 10
  • Bonding materials can chip and break off a part of the tooth
But don't fret. With every bad, there's a good.

Visit My Dentist USA to find out what the Pros of Dental Bonding are.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is the invisible way to straighten teeth using a series of custom-made, nearly undetectable aligners. And it's been proven effective in both clinical research and in practices nationwide. So whether your teeth are crowded, too far apart or have shifted since wearing braces, you'll have a new reason to smile.

No Braces / Nothing to hold you Back.

Because there are no metal wires and brackets, Invisalign is comfortable. And because it's removable, eating, brushing and flossing are no problem. You can still enjoy your favorite foods and smile without holding back.

The latest technology makes it possible.

Using the latest advances in 3-D computer technology, Invisalign carefully translates your doctor's instructions into a series of precisely customized aligners. You then wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, moving your teeth, gradually - week by week, millimeter by millimeter until you've achieved the intended result: Straighter teeth. Generally, you visit your doctor no more often than you would with braces and the length of treatment is about the same.

Low-Carb Diets Can Cause Bad Breath

Low-carb diets may be good for your waistline, but you might not be able to say the same for your breath.

Low-carb lifestyle junkies are more likely to suffer from a seldom discussed side effect of such diets -- halitosis, aka bad breath. And since more than 25 million people say they have tried the Atkins diet (not to mention other low-carb eating plans), according to the National Marketing Institute, bad breath may be an epidemic!

Why Whiter Teeth is Better For You

There are many benefits to your teeth being whiter than simply the beauty aspects of it. People often associate whiter teeth with a healthier lifestyle and better overall oral hygiene. Also whiter teeth may also brighten your smile, not simply because of the whiter teeth, but because you'll be smiling more often and not be embarrassed by dark or yellow teeth.

Do you feel like you could use a little more teeth whitening?

Is there something you think you can do about it?

Well you can. Make sure to visit My Dentist USA to find out more about teeth whitening and maybe even a cosmetic dentist to see what they can do for you.

What about my dental insurance? Will it cover this?

After thorough research, and constant surveying of dentists, most dental insurances have a maximum benefit of anywhere from $800 to $2,300 dollars. This can obviously, usually cover some of your expenses. However, most of the cosmetic dentistry is considered elective, and therefore not covered by insurance. The basic fact is; the insurance companies, as we all know, want to take care of you at the lowest cost possible, not really the best service or option available for you.

You would be very surprised at how much your dentist can, and will work with you. All dentists found on My Dentist USA share one common belief, that the patient comes first. We promise you, that we will do everything within reason, to make your dreams come true, and enhance your smile.

Gingivitis - Oral Periodontal Disease

Gingivitis is the most common periodontal disease. It is an infection of the gums caused by bacteria that form plaque.

In small amounts (when it is newly formed), plaque is invisible and relatively harmless. But when left to accumulate, it increases in volume and the proportion of harmful bacteria grows.

These bacteria release toxins that result in inflammation of the gum tissue. Eventually, the plaque hardens and forms hard deposits called calculus or tartar.
