Pros and Cons of Dental Bridges

Pros Dental Bridges
  • Restore your smile, very natural in appearance.
  • Restore your ability to properly chew and speak.
  • Distribute your bite properly by replacing missing teeth.
  • Prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position.
  • Can last 5-7 years and sometimes longer. If you practice good oral hygiene, it is usual that you will see a longer life span of your fixed bridge.
  • Only requires 2 visits to your cosmetic dentist.
Cons of Dental Bridges:
  • Teeth are typically sensitive to very hot or very cold temperatures for about one month after the procedure.
  • If you do not practice good oral hygiene, you can gather bacteria and have both teeth and gums infection.

Orthodontics - Getting the Facts Straight

Braces. Love them or hate them, they're here to stay. And as time passes there are newer and more efficient ways to get your teeth straight using braces. Gone are the days of wacky head gear, with new technology also comes new braces.

Invisalign is a new type of orthodontic or oral appliance, that is used to straighten teeth like braces, only without the need for metal brackets and painful wires. Although in certain cases the metal brackets are unavoidable, depending on the type and severity of your situation, you might be a candidate for Invisalign. The benefit of Invisalign? Like the name suggests, it's somewhat invisible. People won't know you're wearing braces. They fit like retainers would, only they're clear and are molded to your teeth.

In the case where you might need metal braces, tiny metal brackets are attached to your teeth and then a wire is run through to hold the brackets in place, "bracing" your teeth towards straightening. Although they can be uncomfortable, the metal braces have become a bit fashionable to some people rather than ugly and disdainful like they have in the past.

Breaking Technology in the Field of Dental Implants

Dental implants have been around for years, but with advances in X-rays, as well as dental technology, the world of dentistry is being rapidly enhanced with something once unheard of in the dental arena - comfort!

"With the use of tomography, which is basically a 3-D X-ray machine, dental implantation has never been easier on the patient," Dr. Fallah explains. "With tomography, all vital structures which are pertinent for dental implantation can be seen. From the nerves and bones to the sinuses, everything is shown in 3-D, adding precision to the placement of dental implants."

How natural will my cosmetic dentist make my teeth look? Will people notice I had this procedure done?

Every single case is 100% unique. Dramatic differences (you are missing a tooth, and a cosmetic dentist fixes that) are noticeable. However, our cosmetic dentists are trained specifically to keep this in mind, knowing that this is a huge decision on your part, and the more natural your teeth look, the better. Funny as it is, our recent poll of patients showed that the top 3 questions/statements after the procedure asked by friends and coworkers were:

a. Have you lost weight?
b. You seem to be full of energy all of a sudden, have you been working out?
c. Is that a new outfit?

It is not uncommon for some patients to be so overjoyed they cry, hug their nurse or dentist! Patients self confidence typically sky rocket, feeling more outgoing, more social, and also showing more and more of there new smile. Business professionals brag about quicker career growth, the list is endless. It really is incredible how much a new smile can change your life, both short term and long term.

Confronting Gum Disease

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, gum disease is the most prevalent disease in the world today. Many researchers suspect that gum disease may also be directly linked to heart disease and strokes.

Unfortunately, it is perhaps the least diagnosed and treated of all diseases of comparable magnitude. The biggest reason for this may be that it is a somewhat silent disease, and pain and discomfort only occur in its latter stages. By that time, significant bone loss has already occurred.

Extreme Makeover Using Instant Orthodontics

Are you unhappy with your bite or the way your teeth look and feel, but can't face the idea of orthodontic braces? Instant orthodontics may be the solution to your dental problem.

"Instant" orthodontics (IO) can be defined as the use of techniques to correct malocclusion, crowding, and spacing of teeth in minutes or days (versus the months or years required by traditional orthodontic techniques). Most often, the corrections are accomplished with ceramic veneers, bonding, crowns, and bridges - or a combination of these techniques.

Are you a good candidate for Cosmetic Dentistry?

Many sites will give you a list of questions to ask yourself, that can help you decide if you think you are a good candidate for Cosmetic Dentistry. Unfortunately, the only people that can make that decision is you, and your dentist. No one else, no other site nor magazine, nor TV program, can make you enhance your smile. Only you can do that.

One comment emailed to us frequently after reading this question, is, “the best way to know if you are a good candidate for this is to ask yourself, 1. Are you 100% happy with your smile?” It really is a good question though. If you are 100% happy, that is great. If you are not, then you can make a change. It is easier than ever to enhance your smile. You can contact a surgeon here.

Dental Crowns: How Many Visits?

Dental Crowns usually require at least two visits to your cosmetic dentists office. The initial visit involves the dentist probing and preparing the tooth and the second visit typically involves the placement of the permanent crown.

Dental Bonding: What to Expect

Unlike many cosmetic procedures, little advance preparation is needed for dental bonding. Anesthesia is usually not need for it unless it is repairing a tooth that is decaying. Your cosmetic dentist will use a shade chart to select the correct composite resin which will match your tooth color.

The surface of your tooth will be etched (scraping kind of, it roughens the tooth to allow for better bonding) and then a conditioned liquid will be applied. The composite resin is then applied, molded and smoothed out to the desired shape. A laser is then used to harden the material, and then your cosmetic dentist will make the final corrections, shaping, cleaning to ensure it matches the rest of your tooth surfaces.

Healthy Weight, Better Gums?

Losing extra pounds, revving up physical activity, and eating nutritious foods may give you a new reason to smile.

Healthy teeth and gums are more common in active people who eat nutritiously and aren't overweight, a new study shows.

The study appears in the Journal of Periodontology. It was conducted by researchers including Nabil Bissada, DDS, chairman of the periodontics department at Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine.

Read more of the article and find out exactly how a healthier diet can affect your gums on My Dentist USA.

A missing tooth? Dental care implants!

Losing a tooth by accident or by extraction is not the end of the matter. When a tooth is missing, the resulting gap will allow nearby teeth to tilt or drift from their normal position, and the teeth above the gap will move downward.

Aside from the obvious cosmetic problem, the changed positions of these teeth can lead to severe bite problems causing jaw pain and headaches.

Missing teeth should be replaced to keep other teeth in their normal position. This can be done by Dr. Morgan with a fixed bridge or a dental implant. Both of these treatments offer a good functional and cosmetic result.

Tooth Decay and Repair

Utilizing an intra-oral camera gives both you and us the opportunity to see potential problems occurring in your mouth, such as decay or fractured teeth. Often a tooth will not start bothering you until there is significant loss of tooth structure. With the help of the intra-oral camera, problems can be detected earlier, before you experience a toothache.

No Shots, No Drills...Really?

One of the greatest advances in dentistry in years is here. Now cavities can be removed with no shots or high-speed drills using "Micro Air Abrasion". A painless air-driven stream of fine powder quietly removes decay from virgin teeth without your child even knowing and makes their appointment so much nicer. When we say "virgin" teeth, we mean teeth that have not previously been filled. Obviously, many adult cavities fit this description as well and we have surprised many of our "older" patients with the new "Micro Air Abrasion" experience.
