Orthodontics - Getting the Facts Straight

Braces. Love them or hate them, they're here to stay. And as time passes there are newer and more efficient ways to get your teeth straight using braces. Gone are the days of wacky head gear, with new technology also comes new braces.

Invisalign is a new type of orthodontic or oral appliance, that is used to straighten teeth like braces, only without the need for metal brackets and painful wires. Although in certain cases the metal brackets are unavoidable, depending on the type and severity of your situation, you might be a candidate for Invisalign. The benefit of Invisalign? Like the name suggests, it's somewhat invisible. People won't know you're wearing braces. They fit like retainers would, only they're clear and are molded to your teeth.

In the case where you might need metal braces, tiny metal brackets are attached to your teeth and then a wire is run through to hold the brackets in place, "bracing" your teeth towards straightening. Although they can be uncomfortable, the metal braces have become a bit fashionable to some people rather than ugly and disdainful like they have in the past.

Types of Dental Bridges

There are 3 different types of Dental Bridges:
  • Traditional bridges are the most common type of bridge and are typically made of either ceramics, metal or porcelain. It involves creating a crown for your tooth or dental implant on either side of the missing tooth.
  • Cantilever bridges are used when there are adjacent teeth on only one side of the missing tooth or teeth. It is also mainly used in areas that are under much less stress, such as your front teeth.
  • Maryland bonded bridges or Resin-Bonded Bridges are less expensive, and are made of plastic teeth and gums supported by a metal framework.

Are you a good candidate for Cosmetic Dentistry?

Many sites will give you a list of questions to ask yourself, that can help you decide if you think you are a good candidate for Cosmetic Dentistry. Unfortunately, the only people that can make that decision is you, and your dentist. No one else, no other site nor magazine, nor TV program, can make you enhance your smile. Only you can do that.

One comment emailed to us frequently after reading this question, is, “the best way to know if you are a good candidate for this is to ask yourself, Are you 100% happy with your smile?” It really is a good question though. If you are 100% happy, that is great. If you are not, then you can make a change. It is easier than ever to enhance your smile.

Can Teeth Whitening Become an Addiction?

For seekers of physical perfection who live by the slogan, "You can never be too thin," there's a new one to chew on: "Your teeth can never be too white."

Some are taking the attainment of white teeth to the extreme by exclusively -- and excessively -- using over-the-counter teeth-whitening products.

How bright can my teeth get from teeth whitening?

The level of whiteness resulting from teeth whitening, or teeth bleaching, is dependent on the level of discoloration of your teeth. Overall, you can expect to see noticeable differences of at least 2-3 shades whiter, and sometimes more than that, closer to 5 or 6 shades lighter. This is a great way to enhance your smile, with noticeable difference, that can appear 100% natural.

BriteSmile Teeth Whitening

BriteSmile is the easiest, most effective way to whiten your teeth. Over time the natural aging process can stain and discolor teeth, but with BriteSmile you can return to your naturally whitest smile in just one hour. The procedure is simple and results last for years.

With BriteSmile's breakthough blue-light technology and proprietary whitening gel that contains only 15% hydrogen peroxide, patients experience very little or no temporary tooth sensitivity. It is very gentle and uses no laser or heat.

BriteSmile improves whiteness better than any other treatment available. In fact, there have been many cases where patients have seen over fourteen shades of improvement. The impact on your overall appearance is dramatic.

Metals Used in Dental Crowns

Metals used in dental crowns include gold alloy or a base-metal alloy such as nickel or chromium. In comparison with other crown types less tooth structure has to be removed which makes this a very big added benefit for you. They are the most durable out of all the dental crown types, and rarely chip or break. The biggest negative of this type of dental crown is the metallic color. They are ideal for molars in the back of your mouth, that are not visible.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are a very thin porcelain material that is applied to your tooth. This procedure requires at least two (probably three) visits to the dentist and also a dental laboratory to construct your veneers. Some of your tooth is shaved off, so the veneers can fit properly.

Lumineer Porcelain Veneers

Lumineer porcelain veneers are rather new to the market and made from Cerinate porcelain.Cerinate is a thinner type of porcelain than the porcelain used in standard veneers. Lumineer porcelain veneers are as thin as a contact lense. This is great for you because very little and sometimes no tooth reduction is required. Like porcelain veneers, lumineers also require at least two visits to your cosmetic dentist.

New Technology Makes Dental Implantation More Comfortable

Tomography, 3-D X-ray technology, is making dental implantation easier for the dentist and the patient. All the vital structures involved with dental implantation, such as nerves, bones and sinuses can be seen in 3-D making the placement of dental implants easier.

Before, dentists had to cut the gum to get to the bone to see where to place the implant. It was a long and arduous process that took days to place a tooth. Because bone density is different for individuals, the dentist had to guess where the ideal placement would be.

With tomography, dentists can see where there is a lot of bone, which is ideal for dental implantation. This not only reduces the amount of stress and trauma on the patient, but also makes the procedure faster, more precise and more natural - which of course makes for the best cosmetic result.
