A missing tooth? Dental care implants!

Losing a tooth by accident or by extraction is not the end of the matter. When a tooth is missing, the resulting gap will allow nearby teeth to tilt or drift from their normal position, and the teeth above the gap will move downward.

Aside from the obvious cosmetic problem, the changed positions of these teeth can lead to severe bite problems causing jaw pain and headaches.

Missing teeth should be replaced to keep other teeth in their normal position. This can be done by Dr. Morgan with a fixed bridge or a dental implant. Both of these treatments offer a good functional and cosmetic result.

About Braces

Ordinary Braces are very common and made of stainless steel. They are cemented directly to your tooth, and then attached to each other via a metal wire, or an anchor. These wires guide your teeth into place. You can expect to wear them anywhere from 1 to 3 years, but again, time is on a case by case basis. Although they do come in stainless steel, you do have the option for lighter colors of different materials, like plastic or ceramic. The negatives about those types, are they stain easier, and usually it takes longer for your results. However, many believe they look much better than the typical metal, steel look. After treatment, you will have to wear a retainer to keep your smile optimal.

Cosmetic Dentistry and Smoking - Not a Good Combination

We all know smoking is bad for you, but did you know that smoking may keep you from attaining that perfect smile you've always wanted?

We all know that the tar in cigarettes makes teeth turn yellow and smoking causes periodontal disease. But, if you're a smoker, it can also preclude you from certain cosmetic dental procedures such as implants and teeth whitening.

Dental implants work because they fuse with the jawbone. Smoking inhibits implant-to-bone integration (osseointegration).

Smoking also causes periodontal disease (gum disease) which can lead to dental implant failure.

If you smoke and are considering cosmetic dentistry, you'll need to quit smoking first. Consult a Board Certified Cosmetic Dentist in your area for more information on Cosmetic Dentistry and smoking.

Conquering Dental Anxiety

Nine Steps to Conquering Dental Anxiety by Glenda Payas, DMD.

Anxiety and fear are serious problems for many of us. People experience fear due to a variety of causes; the uncertainty of the future, work pressures, and relationship pressures are only a few of the things people fear on a day-to-day basis. What's more, many suffer from anxiety over their health and are anxious about dental care. Quite a few of these people ignore the warning signs and fail to seek care because they would rather not treat the problem. How do we get past this awful anxiety, which prevents us from taking action? Several important steps can help us to bring these anxieties under control.

Here are some suggestions that may help.

1. Take control of your life. You are in charge of yourself and your future. No one else is in control of your life. You are! Say to yourself 'I am going to address this problem and find a solution through seeking out a health care provider that I trust and that I am comfortable with.'

2. Choose a dentist who understands your needs and is willing to help you. You need a dentist who is determined to provide the finest dental care in an understanding and positive environment where you are the primary focus and a highly professional staff that focuses on you -- the patient. Consider finding a dentist who has the confidence of other professionals around them. Go to a dentist that other doctors and dentists choose as their own dentist. What really matters is that you consider the problem in need of resolution and address it.

3. Make an appointment, and keep it. Before making an appointment decide that you will follow through, because the doctor has set aside that time just for you. Write down the issues you have concerns about, as well as any questions you need to get answered and resolved. It really doesn't matter if you have all the desire in the world if you don't follow through.

4. Begin your journey today. Take charge of your life and decide which issues most concern you. Your dental health should be one of your highest priorities in life. When you have good dental health, your mouth can feed the rest of your body, speak for you effectively, and share your emotions with others in a highly effective and positive way. Don't allow anxiety and fear of dental care to stand in the way of good oral health, and good health in general. These no nonsense suggestions are brought to you with the sincere desire that you will seek out dental care from highly qualified professionals whose primary focus is your total dental health.

What Orthdontic treatments are available?

- Invisalign® is the newest method out there and a good alternative to regular braces. Invisalign uses clear, removable aligners to straighten your teeth, without the use of metal or wires. Unlike the old days, this is a method that allows you to straighten your smile, with a virtually invisible device. It is commonly referred to as the contact lenses for teeth. An added benefit is they are removable, which allows you to eat what you want, drink what you want and maintain good oral hygiene, because you can take them out while you brush your teeth or floss. Treatment time is relatively short, anywhere from 6 months to 1 ½ years, but as everything, is on a case by case basis. After treatment, you will have to wear a retainer to keep your smile optimal.

Dental Implants

Imagine a tooth replacement that looks and feels much like your own natural tooth. Because dental implants can offer this and other benefits, they may be the best way to replace your missing teeth.

Dental implants consist of an artificial tooth root that is implanted into the jawbone and a restoration, or replacement tooth. Once the implant has been attached to the jawbone and a period of healing has passed, the replacement tooth is attached to the implant. Dentures can also be attached to implants, serving as replacement teeth.

Mom's Dental Health Could Affect Baby's Birth

Pregnant women have extra incentive to brush, floss, and take good care of their teeth. Those simple steps could help their babies get a better start in life.

Bacteria in the mouth of the mother-to-be could influence the baby's birth weight and delivery date, says a new study. That's important because babies born prematurely and/or at a low birth weight are more vulnerable to health problems, disability, and even death.

Women Have Better Dental Habits

In a nationwide survey, from the American Dental Association, based on telephone interviews with 1,014 adults conducted in December 2003 it was found that:

  • 25% of those surveyed brush their teeth after every meal, reflecting a steady increase. In 2001, that number was 15%; in 2000, it was 18%; and in 1997, it was 12%.
  • One in five -- 19% -- brush their teeth once a day (almost the same percentage as previous years).
  • 53% brush their teeth twice a day -- a drop. In 2001, it was 60%, in 2000, it was 63%, and in 1996, it was 64%.
  • Women were more likely than men to brush teeth after every meal: 29% of women vs. 21% of men.
  • Men were more likely to brush just once a day: 25% of men vs. 13% of women.
  • Women were more likely to have a dentist than men: 89% of women vs. 75% of men.
  • As for daily dental floss use, 51% use it, up slightly from 48% in 1997.
Maybe it's time men started practicing oral hygiene. Are you a male that admittedly needs to start developing better oral hygiene habits? Start by visiting My Dentist USA today to get all the information you need for that sharper smile.
