More and more people are looking to bottled water for their H2O consumption, paying top dollar for distilled, filtered and spring/artesian water. A new study published in the January/February 2009 issue of General Dentistry, the Academy of General Dentistry's journal, shows that there is convincing evidence that bottled water does not have enough fluoride for growing teeth. Fluoride is the primary source for essential cavity prevention, the primary source of which is tap water. In an effort to feed their children healthier sources of water, parents have been looking more to bottled water than the tap, but bottled water typically does not provide the level of fluoride necessary for cavity prevention. The result is more cavities and lower over all tooth health. "Parents should be in charge of how much bottled water their kids drink, in order to make sure that that they also receive the proper amount of fluoridated water that will keep their teeth healthy," says Patricia Meredith, DDS, MS, FAGD, spokesperson for the Academy of General Dentistry.
