Juices, Tea Encourage Enamel Erosion in Teeth

It's no surprise that sugary colas and fizzy, carbonated drinks are bad for your teeth and promote tooth decay, but research recently conducted shows that the drinks that have always been promoted as being a better alternative for your teeth may be causing another problem: erosion. Juices, teas and energy drinks have been shown now to cause erosion of the precious, white enamel on teeth, leading to tooth decay that is more severe than that caused by normal tooth decay from sugar.

The results of tooth erosion is hypersensitivity, discoloration and cracks in teeth which are all irreversible conditions that can only be treated by replacing the tooth with a crown, dentures or dental implants. My Dentist USA features only the best Cosmetic Dentists who are all fully licensed and experienced Cosmetic Dentists specializing in preventative and restorative dental care.

Read the entire CNN article to discover more about how Juices, Tea and Energy Drinks Erode Teeth.

Dental Health for Baby Boomers

If you're one of the 75 million Baby Boomers in the United States today, you're probably considering the future of your teeth. Questions like "How long will they last?" and "What steps can I take now to preserve them for the future?" are good questions to ask, as gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss among Baby Boomers today.

The American Dental Association has launched an Oral Health Awareness Program focused on the Baby Boomer generation, based on extended life expectancy and noting that "60 is the new 40."

As always, the answers to these questions lie in good oral hygiene practices coupled with regular visits to your dental professional.

More information on the American Dental Association's Baby Boomer Oral Health Awareness Program is available through the ADA website.

Control Dental Anxiety Today!

1. Take control of your life.

You are in charge of yourself and your future. No one else is in control of your life. You are! Say to yourself 'I am going to address this problem and find a solution through seeking out a health care provider that I trust and that I am comfortable with.'

2. Choose a dentist who understands your needs and is willing to help you.

You need a dentist who is determined to provide the finest dental care in an understanding and positive environment where you are the primary focus and a highly professional staff that focuses on you -- the patient. Your dentist should care about each patient rather than how many patients he or she can see each day. The goal should be your care and comfort. Consider finding a dentist who has the confidence of other professionals around them. Go to a dentist that other doctors and dentists choose as their own dentist. What really matters is that you consider the problem in need of resolution and address it.

All Veneers are NOT Created Equal

Our friends at Business Wire recently posted an article on how the different brands of veneers work differently for different people's needs. An informed patient can make all the difference when choosing the right veneers.

"Most people don't think twice about the veneers they receive from their dentists, but they should," said Fred Walke, CEO of MicroDental Laboratories, makers of MAC Veneers. "Different veneer brands are made from different materials and vary in realism, strength, stain resistance, and length of life."

Pay close attention to the veneers the dentist recommends -- the differences are significant. In the past 20 years, breakthroughs in veneer materials have drastically improved levels of quality and design, and at the forefront of this evolution is state-of-the-art pressed ceramic porcelain.

Pressed ceramic veneers, like MAC Veneers(TM) from MicroDental, combine the best in technology and aesthetics, making the most natural-looking and long-lasting veneers available. They can straighten, reshape and improve the color of your teeth, and correct your bite. They are also completely stain resistant and two times stronger and longer-lasting than brands made from older, thinner feldspathic ceramics, and are recommended by top dentists three times more often than other brands.

Regular Check-Ups Are Essential to Healthy, Beautiful Teeth

Regular check-ups are a must. At least every six months.

The most important step you can take to preserve your teeth and gums from decay and disease is to regularly visit the dentist for examinations, x-rays and cleanings. No matter how much you floss and brush, the only way to ensure long term oral health is to visit dentist.

The American Dental Association has identified dentist and dental hygienist visits as the most effective way one can stave off disease and decay. The center of oral preventative care is the dentist visit.

Are you looking for a certified, highly qualified and experienced cosmetic dentist in your area? Find the cosmetic dentist you've been looking for at My Dentist USA, your ultimate resource for certified cosmetic dentists.

Smokers are Twice as Likely To Have Root Canals, study shows

In a study done by Elizabeth Krall Kaye, PhD, MPH, she and her colleagues reported their findings in New York, at a media teleconference organized by the American Medical Association and American Dental Association.

"Our study has shown that men have almost twice the risk of having root canal treatments if they smoke cigarettes, compared to men who never smoke," Kaye said, in the teleconference.

Kaye is a professor in the department of health policy and health services research at Boston University's Goldman School of Dental Medicine.

Do you smoke? This bit of news may be reason enough to have you reconsider. But if breaking the habit is too much of a sacrifice and you find yourself in need of a root canal, be sure to visit My Dentist USA to find the best dentists in your area that are perfect for you.

Laser Technology Helps with Cold Sores and Gum Disease

New laser technology has been developed and approved by the FDA to treat this disease. The laser is a light source from the infrared end of the spectrum that uses low energy power to treat the gums, often without anesthesia. That's right, oftentimes no injections are needed, even with deep pockets. The low power of the light kills the bacteria for up to three months (according to the leading periodontal journal), seals the vessels and nerve endings, and produces little if any pain for the first three days after the procedure. On the third day, the nerve endings begin to regenerate and what little pain there is can be managed quite well with Ibuprofen.

Bottled Water Lacks Cavity Preventing Fluoride

Over the last fifteen years in the United States, there has been a major shift in where Americans get their drinking water. More and more people are looking to bottled water for their H2O consumption, paying top dollar for distilled, filtered and spring/artesian water. A new study published in the January/February 2009 issue of General Dentistry, the Academy of General Dentistry's journal, shows that there is convincing evidence that bottled water does not have enough fluoride for growing teeth.

Fluoride is the primary source for essential cavity prevention, the primary source of which is tap water. In an effort to feed their children healthier sources of water, parents have been looking more to bottled water than the tap, but bottled water typically does not provide the level of fluoride necessary for cavity prevention.

The result is more cavities and lower over all tooth health. "Parents should be in charge of how much bottled water their kids drink, in order to make sure that that they also receive the proper amount of fluoridated water that will keep their teeth healthy," says Patricia Meredith, DDS, MS, FAGD, spokesperson for the Academy of General Dentistry.

Beautiful Teeth and Gums Make You Look Smarter, Study Finds

We all feel better when we have a new haircut, a new pair of shoes or when we get a raise at work. We also feel better about ourselves when we feel good about our smile. According to a new study released by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, a new smile will make you appear more intelligent, interesting and successful.

In the study, eight before and after photos were shown to a cross-section of 528 people who were asked to rate the people depicted on the photos as to how attractive, wealthy, happy they were, among other characteristics. Higher scores went to the photographs with more attractive smiles, showing that a great smile goes a long way.

"Based on a lot of interaction with happy patients, we were expecting this type of difference in attractiveness and popularity with the opposite sex," said Dr. Marty Zase, President of AACD, "but to have large gains in how successful, intelligent, interesting and wealthy patients appeared after cosmetic dentistry caught even us by surprise. We've been telling people that a beautiful smile was a great investment in their futures. Now we have independent evidence."

Healthy Living Makes for Healthy Teeth and Gums

Losing those extra pounds, revving up physical activity, and eating nutritious foods may give you a new reason to smile.

Healthy teeth and gums are more common in active people who eat nutritiously and aren't overweight, a new study shows.

The study appears in the Journal of Periodontology. It was conducted by researchers including Nabil Bissada, DDS, chairman of the periodontics department at Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine.

New Technology Makes Dental Implantation More Comfortable

Tomography, 3-D X-ray technology, is making dental implantation easier for the dentist and the patient. All the vital structures involved with dental implantation, such as nerves, bones and sinuses can be seen in 3-D making the placement of dental implants easier.

Before, dentists had to cut the gum to get to the bone to see where to place the implant. It was a long and arduous process that took days to place a tooth. Because bone density is different for individuals, the dentist had to guess where the ideal placement would be.

With tomography, dentists can see where there is a lot of bone, which is ideal for dental implantation. This not only reduces the amount of stress and trauma on the patient, but also makes the procedure faster, more precise and more natural - which of course makes for the best cosmetic result.
