Learn How to Prevent Tooth Decay in Children

Healthy dental care habits should  be instilled when children are young. Tooth decay can develop in small children when the child’s teeth and gums are exposed to any liquids or foods other than water for long periods of time. One of the most common reasons young children develop tooth decay is prolonged exposure to bottles of formula, milk, juice, or other sugary drinks. Sippy Cups can also be a contributing factor to tooth decay in young children when a child is allowed to sleep with a sippy cup or carry it around with them while they play.

There are a few ways to reduce the risk of tooth decay in children:

  • Do not put your child to bed with a bottle or food – This can expose your child’s teeth to sugars that will sit on their teeth throughout the night.
  • Only give children a bottle during meals – Do not use a bottle or a sippy cup as a pacifier. Limit the time your child can walk around with a sippy cup or bottle.
  • Teach your child to use a regular cup – Drinking from a cup is less likely to cause the liquid to collect around the teeth. Regular cups also must be left on a table and can not be taken to bed.
  • If your child does have a bottle or sippy cup for long periods of time, fill it with water.

While many parents say baby teeth are only temporary, it is important to teach children healthy dental care habits early on. Following these guidelines will help you prevent unnecessary visits to the dentist.

Simple Things to Improve Your Dental Hygiene

Taking care of your teeth is not simply an aesthetic undertaking, but one which can effect all aspect of your health. With the state of the economy as it is, many people who perhaps would never miss their regularly scheduled dental exams and cleanings, are now looking for ways to extend the time in between the dentist without sacrificing their dental care. It is extremely important to go to the dentist to be examined and cleaned, but if you are unable to, or even if you are able to, there are a couple of things you can be doing at home to ensure you are doing everything you can to maintain a healthy smile.

* Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Brushing after you eat is a great habit to get into, but if you can’t remember or if it is too inconvenient, at least try to do it in the morning and in the evening before and after bed.

* When brushing you should move the brush in small, circular motions around the gums and teeth. Be gentle! Brush all the sides of the teeth- front, back and top. Don’t forget to brush you tongue, too!

* Change brushes every three months!

* Use floss and mouthwash. They are simple things which can go a long way in improving your dental hygiene.

Common Dental Questions Answered

It’s important to make sure you are doing everything you can to keep your teeth and gums healthy. There are many things you can daily incorporate into your routine to make sure that your dentist visits yield a clean bill of oral health. First, you want to be brushing two to three times per day, every day. It’s great if you can brush after meals. You want to change out your toothbrush every three months and look for soft-bristle brushes. You want to brush in a gentle, circular motion on the front facing side of your teeth and a back and forth motion on the up and downward facing side of your teeth. Don’t forget to brush the backside of your teeth and your tongue, too!

Next, flossing is extremely important as it can reach plaque and tartar build up that the toothbrush can’t get to. Mouthwash is also a great idea. If you do these things daily, you will be on your way to great dental health. It’s important to keep up with your regularly scheduled dental cleanings and check-ups, too. Catching potential issues early is important in avoiding more major problems which could require a costly and painful fix.
