All Veneers are NOT Created Equal

Our friends at Business Wire recently posted an article on how the different brands of veneers work differently for different people's needs. An informed patient can make all the difference when choosing the right veneers.

"Most people don't think twice about the veneers they receive from their dentists, but they should," said Fred Walke, CEO of MicroDental Laboratories, makers of MAC Veneers. "Different veneer brands are made from different materials and vary in realism, strength, stain resistance, and length of life."

Pay close attention to the veneers the dentist recommends -- the differences are significant. In the past 20 years, breakthroughs in veneer materials have drastically improved levels of quality and design, and at the forefront of this evolution is state-of-the-art pressed ceramic porcelain.

Pressed ceramic veneers, like MAC Veneers(TM) from MicroDental, combine the best in technology and aesthetics, making the most natural-looking and long-lasting veneers available. They can straighten, reshape and improve the color of your teeth, and correct your bite. They are also completely stain resistant and two times stronger and longer-lasting than brands made from older, thinner feldspathic ceramics, and are recommended by top dentists three times more often than other brands.

What types of Veneers are there?

1. Porcelain Veneers: Porcelain veneers are a very thin porcelain material that is applied to your tooth. This procedure requires at least two (probably three) visits to the dentist and also a dental laboratory to construct your veneers. Some of your tooth is shaved off, so the veneers can fit properly.

2. Lumineer Porcelain Veneers: Lumineer porcelain veneers are rather new to the market and made from Cerinate porcelain.

Cerinate is a thinner type of porcelain than the porcelain used in standard veneers. Lumineer porcelain veneers are as thin as a contact lense. This is great for you because very little and sometimes no tooth reduction is required. Like porcelain veneers, lumineers also require at least two visits to your cosmetic dentist.

3. Composite Veneers: Composite veneers is a procedure which involves applying composite resin substance directly to your tooth's surface. It can be fashioned by your cosmetic dentist for your desired shape of the tooth. The are also known as direct veneers.

Three Things to Consider When Considering Veneers

One of today's hottest beauty accessories is a dazzling Hollywood-style smile. What was once considered a luxury for the rich and famous is now a reality for people from all walks of life looking to enhance their appearance with brighter, more beautiful teeth. After simple whitening, veneers are today's most popular choice for a smile makeover.

Fast, easy and versatile, veneers cover the front surface and biting edge of a tooth and can give you a straighter, whiter smile. What used to be a long, complicated process requiring multiple visits and long hours in the dentist chair is now a remarkably easy and comfortable procedure.

  1. Inquire about background and training. A good cosmetic dentist will have completed a significant amount of academic and hands-on post-graduate coursework from organizations like the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), Aesthetic Advantage or the Las Vegas Institute (LVI) for Advanced Dental Studies.

  2. Explain your goals -- top dentists will be straightforward and recommend the best available options for you.

  3. Ask to see a portfolio of past work and a list of references.

What are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers, or "dental veneers," can change the appearance of teeth that are chipped, worn, stained, crooked, or generally damaged. A porcelain veneer acts as a thin shell, covering the surface of a tooth. Porcelain veneers are bonded directly to the front of teeth with adhesive cement for an immediate improvement in the shape and color of each tooth.

The color of porcelain veneers can be matched to the color of a patient's teeth. And because dental veneers are made of porcelain, a glassy composition, they are resistant to staining. Porcelain veneers reflect light in a similar way as tooth enamel, and can be buffed and shaped to look just like natural teeth.

The entire porcelain veneer cosmetic dentistry procedure normally takes only three visits to our Memphis office. In the first visit the patient will discuss the procedure with the cosmetic dentist. During this initial consultation the dental patient will have the opportunity to discuss how the final smile should look. Please feel free to bring pictures of ideal smiles to your initial consultation! During the second appointment the teeth will be prepared for the porcelain veneers and a mold will be made of the teeth. In the final appointment porcelain veneers, designed specifically for the patient, will be placed on the teeth.

Porcelain veneers have become popular in the time that they have been available because they are natural looking, durable, and long-lasting.

The answer to this FAQ was provided by certified dentist, Dr. Mickey Bernstein. To view more of Dr. Bernstein's responses to popular cosmetic dentistry FAQs, click here.
