Do Teeth Whitening Toothpastes Really Work?

We all want a whiter, brighter smile and there are many different products out there for delivering varied results. Whitening toothpastes, though, have special abrasives and detergents in them that buff and whiten your teeth with every use.

But, are these toothpastes meant to be used every day?

Jaimee Morgan, D.D.S., a cosmetic and restorative dentist in Salt Lake City, says that it is OK to use these products every day. Whitening toothpastes are not as strong as traditional tooth-whitening gels or trays, which usually contain a peroxide agent that penetrates the tooth to get rid of stains from within. These products cannot be used every day, as they will corrode your teeth.

Teeth Whitening: How White Will They Get?

The level of whiteness resulting from teeth whitening, or teeth bleaching, is dependent on the level of discoloration of your teeth. Overall, you can expect to see noticeable differences of at least 2-3 shades whiter, and sometimes more than that, closer to 5 or 6 shades lighter.

"The whiter, the better" isn't always what you're aiming for, though. The advantage to working with a trained teeth whitening specialist is that they can help you find the best, most natural shade that looks right on you.

Teeth whitening is a great way to enhance your smile, with noticeable difference, that can still appear 100% natural.

My Dentist USA features only the best cosmetic dentists who specialize in teeth whitening in your area.

An Important Note About Teeth Whitening

Just like all procedures, teeth whitening is done on a case by case basis. It is very important to visit a cosmetic dentist to find out the best procedure for you. It is also important to note that there are numerous over-the-counter methods of teeth whitening that make a wide array of statements, but the only way to have a safe, effective treatment is by visiting your cosmetic dentist. Can Teeth Whitening Become an Addiction?

What Motivates Overuse?

For some, it's a narcissistic compulsion to maintain their youth, analogous to going for repeated plastic surgery, says Richard Frances, MD, an addiction expert and a clinical professor of psychiatry at New York University Medical School. "People are obsessed with the idea of perfecting their bodies and warding off the effects of age," he says.

Matthew Messina, DDS, a dentist in private practice in Cleveland and a spokesman for the American Dental Association, says television makeover programs have had a tremendous influence in making people see how an investment in their smile was also an investment in self-confidence. But this awareness, he says, "can be obsessive if we become hyperfixated."

Some are taking the attainment of white teeth to the extreme by exclusively -- and excessively -- using over-the-counter teeth-whitening products.

The most widely used of these over-the counter products are whitening strips and a tray-based technique, in which a plastic tray, containing a bleaching gel, fits over a person's teeth and is worn for part of the day.

Information on Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is the most commonly requested procedure in cosmetic dentistry. People from all over seek teeth whitening due to tooth discoloration and staining. Red wine, soda, coffee, tea, sugary drinks and smoking are a few of the things that contribute to tooth discoloration over time.

Teeth whitening can be performed in one of two ways, in-office by your dentist or at home by you. The advantage of having your teeth whitened in-office is that you'll see faster results. Advantages of at-home products are lower costs and the ability to provide treatment when need be.
