Can Teeth Whitening Become an Addiction?

What Motivates Overuse?

For some, it's a narcissistic compulsion to maintain their youth, analogous to going for repeated plastic surgery, says Richard Frances, MD, an addiction expert and a clinical professor of psychiatry at New York University Medical School. "People are obsessed with the idea of perfecting their bodies and warding off the effects of age," he says.

Matthew Messina, DDS, a dentist in private practice in Cleveland and a spokesman for the American Dental Association, says television makeover programs have had a tremendous influence in making people see how an investment in their smile was also an investment in self-confidence. But this awareness, he says, "can be obsessive if we become hyperfixated."

Women Have Better Dental Habits

In a nationwide survey, from the American Dental Association, based on telephone interviews with 1,014 adults conducted in December 2003 it was found that:

  • 25% of those surveyed brush their teeth after every meal, reflecting a steady increase. In 2001, that number was 15%; in 2000, it was 18%; and in 1997, it was 12%.
  • One in five -- 19% -- brush their teeth once a day (almost the same percentage as previous years).
  • 53% brush their teeth twice a day -- a drop. In 2001, it was 60%, in 2000, it was 63%, and in 1996, it was 64%.
  • Women were more likely than men to brush teeth after every meal: 29% of women vs. 21% of men.
  • Men were more likely to brush just once a day: 25% of men vs. 13% of women.
  • Women were more likely to have a dentist than men: 89% of women vs. 75% of men.
  • As for daily dental floss use, 51% use it, up slightly from 48% in 1997.
Maybe it's time men started practicing oral hygiene. Are you a male that admittedly needs to start developing better oral hygiene habits? Start by visiting My Dentist USA today to get all the information you need for that sharper smile.

Healthy teeth and gums are more common in active people who eat nutritiously and aren't overweight, a new study shows.

The study appears in the Journal of Periodontology. It was conducted by researchers including Nabil Bissada, DDS, chairman of the periodontics department at Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine.

Have a lip piercing? You might get receding gums.

People who go in for a lip piercing may get more than they bargained for. Besides attracting attention, they could also wind up with receding gums.

Lip piercing can lead to receding gums and may make the problem worse, say researchers from Ohio State University.

They compared the gums of 29 young adults with pierced lips to those of 29 with unpierced lips. All participants were about 22 years old, and roughly half were women.

About 41% of those with pierced lips had receding gums. That's much higher than the 7% rate seen in those with unpierced lips.

Three Things to Consider When Considering Veneers

One of today's hottest beauty accessories is a dazzling Hollywood-style smile. What was once considered a luxury for the rich and famous is now a reality for people from all walks of life looking to enhance their appearance with brighter, more beautiful teeth. After simple whitening, veneers are today's most popular choice for a smile makeover.

Fast, easy and versatile, veneers cover the front surface and biting edge of a tooth and can give you a straighter, whiter smile. What used to be a long, complicated process requiring multiple visits and long hours in the dentist chair is now a remarkably easy and comfortable procedure.

  1. Inquire about background and training. A good cosmetic dentist will have completed a significant amount of academic and hands-on post-graduate coursework from organizations like the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), Aesthetic Advantage or the Las Vegas Institute (LVI) for Advanced Dental Studies.

  2. Explain your goals -- top dentists will be straightforward and recommend the best available options for you.

  3. Ask to see a portfolio of past work and a list of references.

Smile! You have Healthy Gums

That smile you're flashing around may indicate something more than just a happy disposition.

In a recent study published by the Journal of Periodontology (JOP), which is the official publication of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP), that smile can also be a good indicator of healthy teeth and gums. The study found that those with periodontal, or gum disease had a tendency to smile less frequently and even deterred some from displaying positive emotions through a smile at all.

"Since periodontal disease is prevalent in such a large number of adults, we sought to investigate if the disease affects a person's smiling behavior," said study author Dr. Marita R. Inglehart. "Smiling plays a significant and essential role in overall well-being. Previous findings suggest that smiling can affect social interactions, self-confidence and can influence how people perceive one another."

Do you find yourself smiling less because of gum disease or a general dissatisfaction with your oral health? Maybe it's time you looked into getting a smile makeover? At My Dentist USA, you can find the perfect dentist that will put the spark back into your smile. Visit My Dentist USA today.

Low-Carb Diets = Bad Breath?

That beloved low-carb diet that you've been on may have given you an unpleasant side effect that you may or may not be aware of.

Halitosis AKA Bad Breath.

Kennth Burrell, DDS, the senior director of the council in scientific affairs explains:

"Carbohydrates aren't readily available, so you start to use other fats and proteins as your source of energy, and as a result you are going to get a breath problem."

This is not an oral hygiene problem, Burrell says, so "all the brushing, flossing, and scraping of the tongue that you can do is not possibly enough to overcome this."

Are you on any low-carb diets? Have you noticed a spike in bad breath or anything out of the ordinary? You can read more of the article here on My Dentist USA - your source for finding the best cosmetic dentists in your area.

Soft Drinks and Tooth Decay?

According to a press release by the Academy of General Dentistry, they report that:

The average American drinks roughly 576 soft drinks every year -- about one and a half cans a day for everyone in the United States. Drinking these beverages places the people who may not follow proper oral hygiene techniques at a higher risk for cavities and other oral health problems.

However, according to a report in the May/June 2005 issue of General Dentistry, the Academy of General Dentistry's (AGD) clinical, peer-reviewed journal, drinking soft drinks and other beverages through a properly positioned straw can help to minimize the risk of cavities.

So this is great news for people who can't stray from their beloved soft drinks. Use a straw! But if it happens that the soft drink habits gets the best of you, there's always My Dentist USA to help you find your perfect Dentist to help you with any tooth decay that may result from drinking too many soft drinks.

The Laser: A New Approach to Gum Disease and Cold Sores

New laser technology has been developed and approved by the FDA to treat this disease. The laser is a light source from the infrared end of the spectrum that uses low energy power to treat the gums, often without anesthesia. That's right, oftentimes no injections are needed, even with deep pockets. The low power of the light kills the bacteria for up to three months (according to the leading periodontal journal), seals the vessels and nerve endings, and produces little if any pain for the first three days after the procedure. On the third day, the nerve endings begin to regenerate and what little pain there is can be managed quite well with Ibuprofen.

'Good' Bacteria Fight Bad Breath, Smelly Feet

Scientists have found bacteria that fight bad breath and smelly feet.

The bacteria weren't concocted in a lab or discovered deep in a tropical rainforest. They were spotted in a very common location: the human mouth.

In fact, some of those bacteria may be snuffing out bad breath in your mouth right now, if researcher Ann Wood and colleagues are right. Their report appears in Environmental Microbiology.

Wood is a senior lecturer in the life sciences department of King's College London.

Maybe Bad Breath is a problem for you. My Dentist USA and it's article database might be able to help!

Smokers More Likely to get Root Canals

In a study done by Elizabeth Krall Kaye, PhD, MPH, she and her colleagues reported their findings in New York, at a media teleconference organized by the American Medical Association and American Dental Association.

"Our study has shown that men have almost twice the risk of having root canal treatments if they smoke cigarettes, compared to men who never smoke," Kaye said, in the teleconference.

Kaye is a professor in the department of health policy and health services research at Boston University's Goldman School of Dental Medicine.

Do you smoke? This bit of news may be reason enough to have you reconsider. But if breaking the habit is too much of a sacrifice and you find yourself in need of a root canal, be sure to visit My Dentist USA to find the best dentists in your area that are perfect for you.
