Common Dental Problems

Dental care can be complicated, especially when you're frustrated by pain or self-conscious about the way your teeth look. When it comes to actual dental problems, there a few common ailments that a majority of the population suffer and they are:
  • Abscessed tooth - An abscess is a painful condition caused by infection in a badly damaged or decayed tooth.

  • Bad Breath (halitosis) - Halitosis, or "bad breath" is a common, but embarrassing condition that often has a dental cause.

  • Cavities and Tooth Decay - Tooth decay is the process of a tooth's mineral content being dissolved. A cavity, or caries, is the actual hole in a tooth that is caused by tooth decay.

  • Dry Mouth - Dry mouth is caused by an inadequate supply of saliva. This is usually due to medication side effects, but may have other causes.

  • Fluorosis - Fluorosis is a defect in tooth enamel caused by excessive fluoride in young children. It typically looks like white streaks or spots in teeth.

  • Gum Disease (Gingivitis) - Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums that is usually caused by plaque. It is the earliest and most easily treated from of gum disease, as it only affects the gums, but it must be treated to avoid more serious gum disease.
These represent the most common suspects of dental problems, but more are listed here. Check out the article on the My Dentist USA Articles page for more information.

Bad Breath (Halitosis)

Bad breath, or halitosis, is a signal that something is not right inside your mouth. It may be as simple as the need to pay more attention to your daily oral hygiene, or it may indicate tooth decay, gum disease, or another medical problem. Whichever it is, bad breath is a red flag: take another look at your mouth!

Low-Carb Diets = Bad Breath?

That beloved low-carb diet that you've been on may have given you an unpleasant side effect that you may or may not be aware of.

Halitosis AKA Bad Breath.

Kennth Burrell, DDS, the senior director of the council in scientific affairs explains:

"Carbohydrates aren't readily available, so you start to use other fats and proteins as your source of energy, and as a result you are going to get a breath problem."

This is not an oral hygiene problem, Burrell says, so "all the brushing, flossing, and scraping of the tongue that you can do is not possibly enough to overcome this."

Are you on any low-carb diets? Have you noticed a spike in bad breath or anything out of the ordinary? You can read more of the article here on My Dentist USA - your source for finding the best cosmetic dentists in your area.

Help I have Bad Breath!

Bad Breath (Halitosis)

Halitosis, or "bad breath" is a common, but embarrassing condition that often has a dental cause. A thorough examination can help determine the cause and rule out a more serious condition.

How can I tell if I have bad breath?

Unfortunately, those around us are often aware of our bad breath before we are since it is difficult to smell your own breath. If it is not too uncomfortable, you could ask a close friend or family member for their opinion. To test your own breath, try licking the back of your wrist and scraping the back of your tongue with a spoon. Let the saliva on your wrist and the spoon dry for a few seconds, and then smell them. Smelling the spoon and the back of your wrist will give you a good idea what your breath smells like to everyone else.

If you suspect or know that you have bad breath and are looking for a solution, visit My Dentist USA to find the nearest Cosmetic Dentist near you to help you fight off bad breath. Discover more about bad breath at My Dentist USA, search for your nearest Cosmetic Dentist and ask them what they can offer to help you with bad breath.
