Sedation Dentistry

Some people tremble at the mere thought of the dental drill. Others put off necessary dental treatments for years, putting up with pain and discomfort out of fear of the dentist’s office. Other people have had traumatic dental experiences that have made them anxious about going to the dentist.

Well, no more. We believe everyone should receive the dental treatment they need, with no added jitters. For the comfort and ease of our patients in Troy and Detroit, Michigan, we offer the option of sedation dentistry. Sedation dentistry allows us to take the fear out of our patients who experience any type of dental anxiety and helps them to be completely relaxed during treatment, while still remaining awake and responsive.

Candidates for Sedation Dentistry

Patients from all over the Troy and Detroit metro area of Michigan have benefited from sedation dentistry. Candidates for sedation dentistry are people who have fear or anxiety about dental treatments; those who have trouble getting numb, have a sensitive gag reflex, or very sensitive teeth; or those who hate the shots, smells, noises and tastes associated with dental care. It is also an effective solution for people who are embarrassed about their teeth, or who want to take care of a series of complex dental problems in just one visit, rather than six or eight.

What is Sedation Dentistry Like?

Sedation dentistry is now easier than ever, requiring nothing more than taking a pill prior to treatment. Our cosmetic dentists will give you the pill to take before coming into your appointment. Drowsiness and calm will set in before you arrive at our office; for this reason, we require that a companion drive you to and from your appointment.

Upon arriving at our office, we will put you in our comfort room wrapped in a warm blanket. You will be attached to a monitor to keep track of your vital signs throughout the visit.

This type of sedation dentistry allows our patients to remain awake and responsive during treatments while staying calm, relaxed, and unable to feel pain.

Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?

Yes, sedation dentistry of this type is completely safe. While you are sedated, we have someone with you at all times to monitor your vital signs.

Our patients in the Troy and Detroit areas have found that sedation dentistry can make complex, long, or painful dental visits a breeze, no matter how sensitive, squeamish, or fearful they are. Sedation dentistry allows us to easily treat your dental problems and release you to your companion with little or no memory of the visit.

IV Sedation

To better serve our patients, Dr. Craig Goldin has undergone the special training needed to become certified in IV sedation. Also known as "deep conscious sedation," this technique allows medication to be administered directly into the bloodstream, where it’s more effective than medication taken orally and can be easily adjusted.

The advantage of this sedation dentistry technique is that the level of medication can be immediately increased if the patient is not sedated enough. Your vital signs will be continually monitored to ensure that you are relaxed throughout the dental procedure. You will be awake and responsive during your treatment, but in a deep state of relaxation and will probably not remember the procedure. Like standard sedation dentistry, IV sedation requires you to have a companion drive you to and from your appointment.

IV sedation is best for patients who experience moderate to severe dental anxiety.

If you live in the Troy or Detroit, Michigan area and might be a candidate for sedation dentistry, contact the Cosmetic Dentistry Institute today.

CEREC® Restorations

CEREC® is an advanced dental restorative system that allows us to fill decayed teeth, remove defective amalgam fillings, or place porcelain crowns or veneers in just one appointment. In the past, our Detroit area patients had to endure temporary restorations and at least two dental visits before getting permanent restorations. Well, no more; CEREC® quickly and precisely mills restorations with the aid of an advanced computer imaging system.

CEREC® restorations are safe, durable tooth-colored ceramic, not the metal of yesterday. Porcelain crowns and fillings are not only more durable than traditional metal ones, but more attractive. CEREC® restorations use bonding techniques that eliminate the sensitivity problems that traditional fillings and crowns left in their wake; they also allow more of the healthy tooth to be saved.

Video Diagnosis

Ever wonder what your dentist is seeing while he or she pokes around your mouth? Now the mystery is gone, because video diagnosis technology lets patients view, on a computer monitor, exactly what their dentist is seeing. This innovation lets patients get more involved in their treatment. You can even take the pictures home with you.

Digital X-Rays

It’s time X-rays went digital, and the Cosmetic Dentistry Institute utilizes this innovative new technology. Digital X-rays yield larger images than traditional X-rays, and these images can be enhanced, manipulated, easily archived along with your medical records, or e-mailed to your insurance company. They are obtained using small sensors—no more gripping film between your teeth. Digital X-rays make the process easier for patients and more productive for the dentist. Lastly, these images require up to 90% less radiation than with conventional film type x-rays. We are excited to offer this groundbreaking technology to our patients.

Smile Analysis

Everyone’s smile is different—and with our computerized smile analysis, you can get a sneak peek at what yours will look like after your smile makeover. We invite our patients to discuss their desires with us. With the aid of a computer, an image of your new smile will be created based on your desires and the shape of your teeth, face, and mouth. You will leave your appointment with a picture of what your new, improved smile will look like.

At the Cosmetic Dentistry Institute, we conduct smile makeovers using a combination of porcelain veneers, teeth whitening, porcelain crowns, and more. Smile analysis lets our Detroit area patients see what the results of these procedures will look like before you begin treatment.

DIAGNOdent®

We all know that catching cavities early is best. But did you know that the traditional way of detecting cavities—a lot of poking and prodding—is not only uncomfortable, but only successful 50 to 75 percent of the time? Fortunately, DIAGNOdent® is a much more accurate and sensitive tool used in detecting even the smallest cavities, or the ones that “hide” along fissure lines or inside the biting surfaces of your teeth.

DIAGNOdent® is an advanced diagnostic tool that uses a simple laser diode to examine teeth for cavities, uncovering decay without invasive techniques or X-rays. DIAGNOdent® is both more comfortable and more precise in detecting cavities compared to earlier techniques. This tool also makes it easy for dentists to monitor suspicious areas in your mouth without repeated X-rays or harm to tissues.

The Cosmetic Dentistry Institute offers advanced dental technology, including precision-milled porcelain crowns, to our Detroit-area patients. Contact us today to learn more about our technology or to schedule an appointment.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers can provide a completely new look to your teeth and mouth. They safely and attractively mask a variety of dental issues in one step. Our Troy and Detroit, Michigan area patients have found porcelain veneers to be excellent in dramatically improving many aspects of their teeth and mouth – from the size and shape of their teeth, to their whiteness and alignment. Porcelain veneers are custom-crafted sheets of porcelain that slide over your teeth, strongly bonding to them for a permanent hold. They can be crafted to disguise chips or crookedness, to restore length to worn-down teeth, and more. Since porcelain is plaque-resistant, porcelain veneers stay bright and beautiful for years, and require no special upkeep.

A smile makeover using porcelain veneers can be partial or full. A few well-placed, well-crafted porcelain veneers can make an incredible difference. Some of our Detroit and Troy, Michigan area patients choose veneers for a few of their front teeth; others opt for eight or more. At your consultation with our cosmetic dentists, we will choose the correct extent of treatment for you.

Before outfitting our patients with porcelain veneers, we make a careful analysis of your face and mouth shape, the shape and size of your teeth, and your goals for the treatment. A computerized smile analysis will allow you to preview your newer, beautiful smile before you take the plunge. Contact our practice today to learn more about the incredible potential of porcelain veneers.

Fortunately, Invisalign® invisible braces take the hassle and unattractiveness out of straightening one’s teeth, making great alignment a possibility for adults of all ages. Cosmetic Bonding

Cosmetic bonding is a reliable technique used to correct chipped, misshapen, or worn down teeth, as well as to disguise crooked teeth or gaps between teeth without the use of orthodontics. The bonding material is a tooth-colored composite that blends seamlessly with your natural enamel. If you’re dissatisfied with the shape or size of your teeth, cosmetic bonding can help.

Dental Implants

Our patients have found dental implants to be an exciting development in the art of replacing lost teeth. The previous treatments of choice – dentures and bridges – had several disadvantages; bridges could fail and dentures could fit badly and be a hassle to maintain. Dental implants have none of these drawbacks. At the Cosmetic Dentistry Institute near Troy, Michigan, we take pride in offering high quality dental implants and implant dentistry treatment.

Dental implants are strongly anchored to the jaw using a titanium alloy. On top of this post goes a custom-made tooth that mimics the size, shape, and color of your lost tooth. With dental implants in place, no one will know you are missing one or more teeth, and the strength of your bite and the beauty of your smile will be restored. Our patients from throughout the Troy, Michigan area find dental implants and implant dentistry an easy-to-maintain alternative to dentures, bridges, and other restorations.

Don’t put up with missing teeth. They can damage the health of your jaw as well as negatively affect your appearance and keep you from enjoying your favorite foods. Contact the Cosmetic Dentistry Institute today to schedule an appointment.

Dentures

Some of our Troy, Michigan area patients desire dentures after experiencing the loss of most of their teeth. If you are missing many or all of your teeth, dentures are necessary to keep your facial muscles from sagging, to restore the strength of your bite, and to allow you to speak as usual. To outfit you with dentures, we remove any remaining teeth and take careful measurements of your mouth and gums. A well-fitting pair of dentures is comfortable to wear and restores the attractiveness of your face and smile. Our patients from around Clawson and Troy, Michigan have found that dentures can be a good solution to many missing teeth.

There are several different kinds of dentures. Complete dentures are the most common. Complete dentures replace all of your upper and lower teeth. Next, upper dentures are made out of the same materials as complete dentures, but outfit the upper jaw only. Over dentures are similar to complete dentures, but use a few remaining teeth to make them more stable. Lastly, partial dentures fix gaps in your smile created by a few missing teeth, and are important to prevent your teeth from shifting.

It takes an experienced dentist to outfit you with a great-fitting, great-looking pair of dentures, and the team at Cosmetic Dentistry Institute is up to the task. We can outfit you with removable partial dentures if you are missing a few teeth on a particular arch, or we can provide a set of complete dentures.

Natural-Colored Dental Fillings

Our office provides composite resin dental fillings to our patients, which have several advantages over traditional silver fillings. First, they are tooth-colored, so your fillings will no longer stand out against your teeth. Plus, they don’t contain mercury, which many physicians feel can affect your health – and to top it all off, they can be bonded to the tooth eliminating the leakage that silver fillings have. For these reasons, we often replace patients’ old silver fillings with natural-colored composite fillings and use composite when filling patients’ teeth.

TMJ Treatment

TMJ disorder is a complex condition that affects the jaw (temporomandibular) joint, or TMJ. Many patients from around Troy, Michigan, have come to us seeking TMJ treatment after experiencing pain in the jaw or other symptoms, such as clicking of the jaw.

Disorders of the TMJ can cause many annoyances, including inability to fully open the mouth and various types of tooth, ear, jaw, and facial pain. TMJ disorders can be caused by trauma (such as grinding the teeth), disease (such as rheumatoid arthritis), habits (clenching the jaw, for example, during periods of stress), or simply aging.

TMJ disorders can take years to develop, and are often caused by malocclusion (bad bite) – a condition that, fortunately, can usually be solved easily, without surgery. In patients with facial or jaw pain, it’s often useful to carefully study the nerves, soft tissues, and muscles of that region. Often, this study can reveal the extent of malocclusion and suggest ways it can be corrected.

Since many different things can be the source of pain in the facial region, TMJ treatment and diagnosis can be tricky. However, our experienced dentists at the Cosmetic Dentistry Institute have diagnosed many cases of TMJ disorders over the years and are skilled at noticing the condition. If you are in the Troy, Michigan area, rely on us for effective TMJ treatment. Contact us today.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a common but potentially life-threatening condition. It occurs when the airway becomes obstructed during sleep, but efforts to breathe continue. Those with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing during sleep, sometimes hundreds of times a night. This lack of oxygen can cause the patient to wake many times a night, leaving them unable to fully rest.

It is important to recognize and treat sleep apnea. The condition may be associated with high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke, and can lead to vehicle crashes, drowsiness, and job impairment. If you find yourself habitually drowsy, you might have sleep apnea and we urge you to schedule an examination at our office. The dentists at the Cosmetic Dentistry Institute are experienced in recognizing and treating sleep apnea. To learn more about this condition, contact us today.

As dentists who are familiar with the anatomy of the mouth and throat, we can outfit you with an oral sleep appliance which prevents snoring by keeping your airway open. Most snoring sufferers don’t have a serious medical disorder, but snoring is something worth treating. If you or your partner is affected by snoring, contact the Cosmetic Dentistry Institute today.
